Graduate Fashion Week Launch Protégé Project, Showcasing Graduate Talent

THE PROTÈGÈ PROJECT launched by Graduate Fashion Week, an event hosted in London each June, aims to aid and support award winners and BA fashion graduates enter into the industry.

Graduate Fashion Week managing and creative director, Martyn Roberts, and acclaimed fashion journalist Hilary Alexander OBE, will give masterclasses at universities across the country to educate and guide students, assisting them in creating strong and consistent portfolios and collections. The masterclasses also hope to show current fashion students how GFW can support their careers within the fashion industry.

This October, Graduate Fashion Week will be taking 11 graduates, including award winners to Fashion Forward Dubai, the Middle East’s largest fashion event. There, the designers will present their collections to an audience of international fashion devotees.

The V&A Presents Fashion In Motion: Phoebe English

LUXURY BRITISH, women’s and menswear label Phoebe English will be the next designer to feature in Fashion In Motion, this October at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Fashion In Motion will highlight the precise beauty of six years of Phoebe English’s collections. Made in England, the Phoebe English, label deploys lost and rarely used garment construction and fabrication techniques, embodying the mark of the maker.

The fashion collections will be centred within set designs, produced to capture the imagination and involve the viewer, setting the label apart from trend led, mass-made fashion design. The collections are aimed toward a balance between design and craft. A pop up shop of selected garments, specially crafted pieces for the V&A and unique exclusive works to be sold at V&A promotional prices will feature as part of the show.

English says, “Taking part in Fashion in Motion has a particular significance to me, as the V&A was the museum in which I decided to follow my interest in fashion. It is the building where my love for clothing and design were contextualised into a tangible practice and pathway”

After debuting her first fashion collection and graduating from Central Saint Martins with an MA from their Fashion Programme, English won several awards including L’Oréal’s Professional Creative Award, the Chloe Award and the Ungaro bursary. This collection was also picked up by luxury fashion shop, Dover Street Market London.

In 2013, The Centre for Fashion Enterprise awarded English a mentoring and sponsorship as part of the coveted Venture Programme. And two years later, Forbes listed English in the 30 under 30, influential Art and Style category and her menswear line, Phoebe English MAN, was awarded the NEWGEN Award by the British Fashion Council.

Inspiring designers, students and researchers, the V&A  is home to some of the UK’s biggest national, fashion collections along with unique and comprehensive collections of world fashion spanning the last four centuries.

V&A fashion curator, Oriole Cullen says, “Phoebe English is a designer for whom the presentation of her work is an integral part of her design process. For each of her collections she creates intriguing and beautiful scenarios in which to showcase her designs. We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with Phoebe as part of the V&A Fashion in Motion programme, particularly as she has previously used the Museum as a source of inspiration for her collections”

Catwalk shows from leading, international fashion designers bring their collections to V&A Fashion In Motion, to show fashion garments moving and animated, as they should be seen. Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier and Christian Lacriox are some of the designers previously showcased at the museum.

BFC Announce Fashion Awards 2017 with Swarovski

THE British Fashion Council have announced that The Fashion Awards 2017 will be returning to the Royal Albert Hall, Kensington, London this December. The annual event celebrates fashion excellence with outstanding individuals and business, both British and international, taking centre stage and recognising their contributions to the global fashion industry.

The BFC’s Education Foundation is funded primarily by The Fashion Awards. The premise of the awards is securing the future for the next generation of fashion talent but to also celebrate current leaders and their exceptional contributions to the industry. Caroline Rush CBE, CEO of The British Fashion Council, said, “Last year’s awards marked a landmark moment for the Education Foundation; it has been fantastic to see our industry reaffirm its support for education with such generosity.”  Thanking one of their main sponsors, Rush continued, “Swarovski have set the bar with their incredibly generous donation to this year’s fundraising efforts.”

The Fashion Awards 2016 raised £700,000. The BFC Education Foundation received £300,00, with £400,00 invested in NEWGEN business support and the BFC Colleges Council. To date, the foundation has given over £100,000 to 12 BA and MA scholarships, in the last academic year. BFC Chairman Dame Natalie Massenet MBE said, “Last year we set the goal of raising £10million in 10 years to educate talented young people”.

Swarovski, acclaimed Austrian crystal producers, continue their generous support of the educational foundation, in advance of the event, pledging £300,000. Nadja Swarovski, of the Swarovski Executive Board stated, “An essential part of Swarovski’s mission is to nurture young designers and invest in the next generation of fashion talent.” Donations from Swarovski and those of some of the most esteemed British brands help maintain the future success of the industry for the next generation due to the impact of rising living expenses and tuition fees.

The event will be attended by designers, brands, creatives, business leaders, investors, media, VIPs, students and the general public. The ceremony not only recognises designers but to also diverse and talented individuals and their contributions to fashion. Nominations and winners are to be voted for by a panel of 2,000 international, key figures from across the fashion industry.

100% Egyptian Cotton Project Featured at International Fashion Showcase

DURING LFW AW17, a 100% Egyptian Cotton project showed for the second time at the International Fashion Showcase, in Somerset House, exhibiting the work of six of Egypt’s most promising emerging designers: Maram Paris – womenswear; Marsuma by Nour Omar – textiles painting; Norine Farah – womenswear; Okhtein – handbags; Reem Jano – jewellery and Sabry Marouf handbags and jewellery.

The artists were commissioned to produce pieces which reflected their interpretation of Egyptian cotton as a theme but were otherwise granted complete creative freedom. The stunning results encompassed references to the life cycle of the cotton plant, to the harvesting of the delicate fibre through to the manufacturing of the incredibly versatile textile into finished products. The two ready-to-wear designers for example, embellished classic white cotton shirts with intricate floral detail, alluding to the colourful garments worn by the young women who work in the cotton fields.

The exhibition was curated by Susan Sabet, founder and editor-in-chief of Pashion magazine, and was endorsed by the British Council Egypt and the Commercial International Bank Egypt (CIB). Sahara by Shahira Fawzy provided the cotton utilised throughout the display while the installation itself – a dreamy North African oasis under a vibrant dusk sky – was styled by Egyptian interior design company Living In.

The exhibit proved one of the most popular at the event – the theme of which was this year Local/Glocal – which  is organised by the British Council and the British Fashion Council.

Loren Nicole announces latest collection

HANDMADE jewellery designer Loren Nicole has launched her newest collection. Using ancient techniques and no electricity, Loren Nicole’s handmade jewellery collection celebrates ethnographic cultures from across the world and the craftsmanship of ancient goldsmiths.

Each piece of jewellery is designed to highlight the beautiful colour of high karat yellow gold and is produced from gold grain to final finish by Loren’s hand.

Her collections are inspired by a different ancient civilisation’s techniques and aesthetic element, with her first entitled Hellenes highlighting the Etruscan style. Loren’s latest jewellery collection Babylon is inspired by the ancient Mesopotamia temple Ziggurat.

Loren began her career in archaeology and then specialised her skills at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York through a position as a textile conservator.

Dutch Brand ST. Studio Debuts its SS17 Collection

DUTCH womenswear brand ST. Studio has debuted its SS17 Collection. The elegant collection takes inspiration from the influential ballet company, Ballet Russes, an itinerant ballet company based in Paris that performed between 1909 and 1929. The company is well known and appreciated for its world-class choreography and revolutionary costume design.

The refined and powerful collection offers much in the way of design including exquisite tailoring, supple denim, modern co-ords and romantic 3D-lace.

Longstaff Longstaff Presents Loungewear for Valentine’s Day

LUXURY brand Longstaff Longstaff offers a range of silk loungewear for Valentine’s Day. The collection includes silk robes, tunics, pyjamas and camisoles which are available in four different styles with each one first being designed on paper before being digitally prepared for printing on silk.

Inspiration for the collection comes from founder Sophie Barnard’s Russian background. These roots, inherited through her mother, led her to develop a passion for fresh vibrant colours and decorative patterns such as those used by Russian illustrator Ivan Bilibin and the costume designs of Leon Bakst. Also as a child Sophie loved dressing up and her dressing-up box was full of bearskin hats, sarafans and a beautiful kokoshnik, a traditional Russian head-dress, which also inform and influence her designs.

The brand, named after Sophie’s paternal grandmother, who was one of seven sisters all with the middle and surname Longstaff, is designed, sourced and manufactured in Britain. Sophie has always been captivated and inspired by the stories of elegant parties, wild adventures and handsome suitors from her grandmother and pays homage to the British eccentricity from her father’s heritage through her designs.

Acqua di Parma Opens its First Boutique in the USA

ITALIAN fragrance and lifestyle brand Acqua di Parma, has celebrated its 100-year anniversary by opening its first  boutique in the US. The brand, known for its most refined Italian style, which was only available through select shop-in-shops, selected Miami as its first location in the USA, due to the city’s celebrated art, design and culture.

The store, situated in the new Brickell City Centre in the heart of Miami, invites customers to an ultimate Italian experience, based on tradition and heritage.

The 1,000 square feet boutique is designed to evoke a sense of an elegant Italian home while paying the utmost attention to detail. The Miami store has been outfitted with the brand’s signature design characterised by Calacatta marble and dark Wenge wood harmonising with the classic yellow Acqua di Parma-coloured walls. Visitors to the store can walk through the Acqua di Parma universe from the men’s fragrance area through to the lifestyle area.

Jasper Conran Launches Eyewear Collection

BRITISH fashion designer Jasper Conran has launched a new collection of eyewear for SS17. The range includes 24 designs encompassing both men’s and women’s style. The collection is set to include a range of colours as well as the classic tortoiseshell style for both men and women.

Conran has been designing since 1978 when he launched his first womenswear collection in New York. Since beginning his career, Conran has diversified from womenswear into all areas of fashion as well as interior design and the performing arts.
